About This Game
Mario Kart DS revolutionized portable racing with its dual-screen presentation - the top screen displays the race while the bottom shows a map or special items. The game runs at 60fps, unprecedented for a handheld racer at the time.
The title features Mission Mode, where players complete specific challenges across 8 difficulty levels. Battle Mode returns with 5 arenas including the fan-favorite Block Fort from Mario Kart 64.
With download play, a single game card could support up to 8 players locally. The online service (discontinued in 2014) allowed worldwide competitions and tracked player statistics.
Mario Kart DS became the best-selling DS game with over 23 million copies sold. It established many conventions that became series staples, including the retro cup concept and online multiplayer.
